Guessing Screen Unseen 12/11

12/11 Update: It was Boys in the Boat. 3-3!

Monday is the third edition of Screen Unseen at AMC. It’s also the 21st at Regal Cinemas, but we only have one of those here up in Walled Lake, and I’m not a fan of that theater. So, I was glad when AMC decided to copy Regal, as at least with the first two, it’s been the same movie at both places, and on the same day. With all that said, the clue we were given for Monday’s film was that it was PG-13, and 2 hrs, 11 min long. As far I can see, we have 5 options, ranging from slim to pretty great.

Off the bat, I think Aquaman and Color Purple can be cut off the list. Warner Brothers probably doesn’t need the early screening to draw people in on either of those two. Aquaman will make its money regardless, and musicals at Christmas usually play well. As much as it would make me happy, I don’t think Zone of Interest is it either. A slow drama about a family of Nazis doesn’t really fit in to what previous movies have been for the Mystery Mondays.

That leaves us with two real possibilities. Freud is at 1 hr, 49 min, which is well in the time range, and it does fit the independent film role. However, Boys in the Boat sits at 2 hr, 3 min, and at one point was in the Oscar discussion. That probably means nothing, but the last two Mystery films were Next Goal Wins and American Fiction. Both of those were in the discussion at one point (Fiction still is). So, at the end of this, I will go with Boys in the Boat, and hopefully keep my perfect streak intact. I have 2 movies starting in about 2 hours, so my next post in a day or two will be my first review post. Hold back on your excitement.
