Thoughts about the Super Bowl Trailers

I am a Chargers fan. Yes. I know I live in Detroit. I made my fandom choice 20 years ago, and I am never changing. Bolt Up! I bring that up here to say that I usually don’t really care about the Super Bowl. I still watch it every year, because football, but what I look forward to every year during the game is something else. You may assume it’s the commercials then. You are partly right. In the last decade at least, studios have treated the Super Bowl as their big chance to show off what they have planned for theaters in the summer. This of course isn’t something that has only happened in recent times. I remember the Super Bowl teasers for Lost World and Godzilla. Those were awesome. This year, the rumors have been we have at least two movies that will have their first look during the big game. I thought it would be a good exercise to jot down thoughts about all the trailers in the Super Bowl this year. It will also give me something to do if my hated Chiefs end up winning the game. Here we go.

Pregame

Bob Marley: One Love – Okay. This one comes out on Wednesday, so why waste the money on a Super Bowl ad on it. It’s basically the same ad I’ve seen on TV the past week too. Now, part of me is just waiting for Madame Web to do the same later on tonight.

The Fall Guy – This one has the first weekend in May slot after Deadpool got delayed, and it could be fun. This trailer looks so much different than the theatrical one since it really didn’t show any of the plot. Kind of a pointless one.

Kung Fu Panda 4 – This is currently the next movie to see with the kids next month. The bunnies are adorable, but I’m a little surprised they just went with a scene from the movie here. It comes out Easter weekend, and there haven’t really been any TV spots yet, so this would have been a good time to a first real one.

Despicable Me 4 – When this started as an A.I. commercial, I was wonderering where it was going. Then the Minions showed up and I knew what was happening. If this is a harbinger of the promotional campaign, I’m going to lose my mind. The Minions have their own movies. Maybe focus on Gru and the kids a little more.

A Quiet Place: Day One – This was basically the trailer that premiered earlier this week. I’m all in for this one. The first two in the series were excellent, and now we get a prequel set at a time where people didn’t know the aliens hunted by sound yet? Is it June yet?

Deadpool & Wolverine – Now we are cooking with gas. Last month, I posted the movies I was most looking forward to. This was numero uno on that list. This spot was fun, but the MCU always gives you a taste of things, then has you go to the internet to watch the whole trailer. That’s what I did. Five times to be exact (so far). Oh man this looks good. I kind of admire their restraint in showing Jackman yet. We also know so little of the plot too. If this is the only thing we see of this until July I would be thrilled. It won’t be though. Disney will probably reveal the whole plot by then.

First Quarter

Wicked: Part One – When I brought up the special Super Bowl trailers, this is what I was talking about. This doesn’t come out until Thanksgiving. That’s 9 and a half months from now. Stupid early for a trailer. This looks awesome so far, and we haven’t heard Grande or Erivo sing the classic songs in the musical yet. Disney announced this week that Moana 2 will be released the same weekend as Wicked. That seems like a grave mistake for a studio badly needing a win.

The three new movies that were rumored to premiere trailers tonight were Deadpool, Wicked, and Twisters. Two down, one to go hopefully.

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes – Really just an extension of a brief scene in the trailer I can’t escape from in theaters. I did see on X that there is supposedly a new trailer out now too. I’ll let that go for now. I’ve got three trips to the theater this week. I’m sure I’ll see the new one soon.

Second Quarter

Twisters – It took just over a quarter, but all three rumored trailers have now appeared. Not sure what to make of this. Reportedly, nobody from the original is showing up, but that sure looked like the Dorothy in the back of one of the trucks. This could be a solid summer release, kind of like the 1996 movie was.

Third Quarter

If – The last of the big May releases to show up tonight. This was 20ish second version of the trailer that has been out, but it starts with the meta-joke from The Office where Jim pranks Dwight by having Randall Park pretend to be Jim. Park here is pretending to be Krasinski here.

All the rumored trailers have shown up so far, save for one. Ball is in Disney’s court next quarter.

Fourth Quarter

Monkey Man – Still looks interesting. This spot is just a teaser for the full trailer that has been out for few weeks.

Overtime

Kung Fu Panda 4 – Second round for this one and it’s an actual trailer this time.

Postgame

Inside Out 2 – Well, Disney waited until all the kids went to bed to have this spot to show. There really isn’t anything new in the trailer. We still don’t know who the other emotions are yet.

Final Thoughts

Overall, it was good night this year. Deadpool certainly looks good and Twisters looks good too. Other than those two and Wicked, we didn’t really see anything new from the other movies that showed up tonight.
