The Oscar Thought Bubble

I watch the Oscars every year. It’s my Super Bowl each year. I thought of doing a live blog this year, but I just couldn’t get things together in time. So below is. a faux live blog. I noted down thoughts as things went along last night and they are what follows below.

6:55 pm: Do normal people actually watch the entire red carpet show? With the show starting an hour early, it’s been nice to not have to be ready to watch it at 7 and have to sit through an hour of nonsense. It started at 1:00 pm this year.

7:00 pm: Why are we still on the red carpet?

7:06 pm: It’s like we are at the theater when the movie is supposed to start at 7:00, but commercials and trailers delay it by 20 minutes……

7:09 pm: Is the stage smaller this year?

7:19 pm: Kimmel is nailing this monologue. The RDJ joke and the Yorgos one were great. Also, why is The Rock here?

7:26 pm: First award and everyone knows the winner already. Randolph completes the sweep! These acting presenter speeches are going to be nice all night.

7:30 pm: There is no way this ends in time. 30 minutes in and we have one award of 23 given out. 3 hours to go.

7:36 pm: Got the first pure guess pic wrong. War is Over won the animated short and I don’t have to look on social media to see all the eye rolling about that win. I just know it is happening.

7:39 pm: Miyazaki for the win! That was one I was really nervous about getting wrong. Across the Spider-Verse had some serious momentum. That is Miyazaki’s second win and didn’t show up to accept either time.

7:52 pm: Anatomy of a Fall wins Original Screenplay and the walk up music is the steel drum P.I.M.P. version from the film. Just awesome. As for Adapted, I should have listened to my brain and switched to American Fiction. I didn’t and I split the screenplay categories. Side note: we are 50 minutes in and Oppenheimer hasn’t won anything yet. That will change soon.

7:55 pm: This was my least favorite song from Barbie and of course it will win later tonight. I would have put Dance the Night in this spot.

8:04 pm: Poof! there goes Maestro’s only real shot at an award tonight as it loses Makeup to Poor Things. This makes me think Poor Things is going to take Costumes and Production now.

8:08 pm: I was right to be worried. Poor Things takes Production….

8:12 pm: and there goes Costume to Poor Things. Is the biggest movie of the year’s only award tonight going to be Original Song? On the other side, if Poor Things picks off one of the technical awards Oppenheimer is favored for, it cracks the door open for a Best Picture upset possibly. Chances of that are still near 0.

8:23 pm: If only France nominated Anatomy of a Fall for International. Then it wouldn’t be such a runaway for Zone of Interest to win here.

8:27 pm: Stunt montages are great, but make it an award already! I feel like that whole segment was the Academy teasing people like me that want that to be added to the Oscars.

8:30 pm: The presenter pairings have made sense for the most part. Blunt/Gosling for Fall Guy, Beetlejuice and Furiosa pairings. However, what was the reason behind Bad Bunny and the Rock?

8:38 pm: It’s RDJ’s time to shine and this is going to be the speech of the night.

8:49 pm: Toho takes Visual Effects. I got that wrong and I’m not mad about it. still, The Creator’s effects are spectacular. I stand by me picking that one.

8:52 pm: So begins the Oppenheimer portion of the evening. That’s the third of my slam dunk picks earlier this week.

8:57 pm: 11 awards to go and 90 minutes left to hand them out. 2 songs left tonight perform, an in memoriam song, and we have two more of those long acting presenter sections.

9:07 pm: I got Documentary Feature right (that wasn’t hard to pick) but not Doc Short. I came so close to switching to The Last Repair Shop, but I decided to stick with my gut. That worked out well….

9:15 pm: There was no way on God’s green Earth that Hoyte Van Hoytema wasn’t going to win for Cinematography. They invented the black and white IMAX for the film.

9:18 pm: Wes finally wins an Oscar and doesn’t show up.

9:19 pm: This song is from a movie about Cheetos. Let that fact wash over you. Madness. It’s just so important that Diane Warren is nominated every year.

9:28 pm: Zone of Interest wins Sound! That was the what turned out to be an upset pick I had on my list. The sound in that film was a depressing, upsetting character in a film that I think I can only watch once.

9:31 pm: I’m Just Ken really should win tonight. This is awesome.

9:41 pm: Ludwig has one this award this year at almost every show. It’s his 2nd of maybe many Oscars for Original Score.

9:43 pm: Yes. I got song correct. No. I don’t think it should have.

9:45 pm: Ok. The riff raff is taken care of. The big 4 awards are the only ones left. We are probably about to hear the name Christopher Nolan a lot in the next 45 minutes.

9:50 pm: Is this a strange song choice for the In Memoriam section?

10:01 pm: Murphy wins Actor, but Coleman Domingo will most likely be back next year for Sing Sing.

10:05 pm: Nolan finally get his Oscar!

10:09 pm: We are either about to get a big moment, or another Emma Stone win.

10:15 pm: Well, that’s disappointing. I’m just not a Poor Things fan.

10:22 pm: Oppenheimer wins Best Picture to the surprise to nobody.

So, that is the Oscars for another year. Oppenheimer was big winner, taking home 7 awards. Poor Things won 4, and Zone of Interest won 2. I went a very mediocre 15/23 this year on my picks. I blame my dislike for Poor Things. That accounted for 4 of my misses. Kimmel was really good as host, like normal, and the highlight of the night has to be the performance of I’m Just Ken. The show actually ended in time too. It’s a miracle.
