Week of April 8th – War Week

Welp. I took a week off from reviewing films, but that doesn’t mean I didn’t see anything. There were three films during that week, and here is a very quick recap: Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire (3 out of 5), Problemista (3.5/5), and Monkey Man (3.5/5). They were all just ok. Monkey Man was a little disappointing and Problemista was a little better than I was expecting.

Anyways, it’s time to move on to this week and it consisted of the two films I was looking forward to the most this month. Did they let me down? Let’s find out. On to the reviews!

A lot of Guy Ritchie films all look the same. With this film, you can see some Gentleman, The Man from U.N.C.L.E., Operation Fortune, Sherlock Holmes. If those weren’t your bag, you are going to have a bad time in this film. I didn’t have a bad time though. This was about Churchill’s secret operation to send a crew to stop the Nazi from keeping the US out of the war in Europe. What really made this a fun time was the cast. Cavill, Gonzalez, and Ritchson were all very good here. The action scenes all looked good, and the pacing really worked too. This was a goofy type of WW2 film that feels like it is trying to be Inglorious Basterds a little and fails. Still, it was a fun two hours that will be lost to time right around when Ritchie’s next film action film comes out.

This was a film that I thought was really interesting coming out this year, especially what is coming for are of us in November. However, whatever people have thought about it that isn’t really what happens in this film. What this film is really about is a team of journalists trying to get to the White House before it is taken over by the Western Forces of Texas and California during a Second Civil War. Garland doesn’t tell you in the film what side is right and which side is wrong. What he does show you is how the war itself is affecting everyone, and sometimes bringing up the worst part of people. If you’re going to this looking for a happy ending, you haven’t seen a Garland film before. This doesn’t have a lot to say other than this could be us if we continue going down the road we are right now. That didn’t matter to me that much though since this film really worked for me. It’s right up with Ex Machina a decade ago in my rankings of his films. Not sure when I will see it again, but I’m sure it will come back up in a few months.

This was almost a waste of time. Of course, not all biographical films are bad. This biopic was about Shirley Chisholm’s run for the Democratic Presidential nomination in 1972. This may be a spoiler if you slept through history class, but her campaign failed. There is a question at least three people asked Chisholm about her campaign: Why are you doing this? That is a good question I would like to ask the filmmakers. Why focus on a campaign that never had a snowballs chance in hell of working, and not her time in Congress where she did a lot. In this, we go from her first week in Congress, to right into the campaign. In real life, there was 4 years between those two points in time. This was just another Netflix film that no one will be thinking about in two weeks. Just like 80% of their films there.

The Box Office has been a little boring the last couple weeks. Godzilla X King Kong has been up top for two weeks, and was only knocked out this weekend by Civil War in a soft Box Office weekend. I don’t see a lot of money in this upcoming weekend either. Only two main films come out with Abigail and Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare going wide starting Thursday.

1. Abigail

2. The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare

3. Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire

4. Civil War

5. Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire

At this point, it looks like next week will be another 3 film review post. I have Abigail on Thursday that I’m sure is a bad choice for me since I really don’t like gory films. So, yay for me.
