Week of April 22nd – A Tale of Two Films

This week was a limited one for me. The NFL Draft is here in Detroit this week, and I attended that with my Dad and Brother. Then, I had a Tiger game Saturday. All those events this week meant that I had a window of 4 days to see movies, and I only got to two this time. That means one I was planning on seeing this week, Challengers, is now pushed to next week’s review post, as will be watching that Sunday night after this post goes live. What of those two movies this week though? One of them has a very good shot as being the movie shown in August at the Lloyd Severance Thumb Gospel Music Convention that I help run. I’ll let you guess which one that is after you read the two reviews below. On to the reviews!

Last week in the Abigail review, I said I don’t do well with gory movies. Abigail walked so Boy Kills World could run. Oh man was this a lot. One of the many reason I stayed away from Evil Dead Rises was I read there was a scene involving a cheese grater. Well, there is a whole fight sequence in this one involving one and I winced every time it was used. That is just one way to show how brutal this one is. Skarsgård’s unnamed Boy is a one man wrecking crew in this. What turns this from a uber-violent movie to a mostly fun one is H Jon Benjamin’s commentary as Boy’s inner monologue, due to him being deaf and a mute. There is an also a fun dynamic with Boy’s imagined sister who pops up anytime she wants to distract Boy.

At the end of the day though, this is the Bill Skarsgård show. His acting in basically a silent film role is excellent. His facial acting to what Benjamin is saying is really fun to watch. This is kind of what I wished Monkey Man could have been. That movie kind of stopped short at times. This one very much does not. The final battle had moment my wimpy self had to look away, and the noises in my theater during the fight were interesting. I think after this one and Abigail, I’ve reached my limit for these ultra violent films for awhile. It’s a good thing Deadpool and Wolverine might be the last one on the horizon, but that will be a much different movie.

There is a very good chance the tone shift going from Boy Kills World to this is the most striking I have had in a couple years. For starters, nobody uses a cheese grater as a weapon in Unsung Hero. Seriously though, this was a good one. This was based on the Smallbone family from Australia. The father of the family, David, was a Christian music promoter, but after a failed Amy Grant tour that cost him $500k, the family had to move to Nashville to start over. While things didn’t go David’s way, his daughter, Rebecca, starts her career in music. You might know her as Rebecca St James. Her two brothers also have a successful career as King & Country. King & Country are also the producers of the film. This was way better than most of the Christian movies for me. It is an uplifting movie that really shows that God really has a plan for us all.

Guessing what will be in first place this upcoming weekend is a lay-up this time. It will be the first weekend of May, so the big guns are staring to roll out in theaters. I’m expecting a pretty big gap between Fall Guy and whatever lands in second.

  1. The Fall Guy
  2. Tarot
  3. Challengers
  4. Civil War
  5. Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire

As just mentioned above, April is just about over, and the Summer Movie Season is about to kick off. Next weekend, the Fall Guy gets the traditional MCU release date after Deadpool and Wolverine got delayed to July. It will be interesting to see if it can perform as well as others have that weekend, MCU or not.
