The 1987 Tournament

Last month, I concluded the inaugural Box Office Classic. I have always liked tournaments, real and fake. It always is a good way to have new and strange discussions. So, each month, I will have a new tournament that will most times themed to something next month. For example, June’s theme is Pixar because Inside Out 2 is released that month.

For this first one, I went a little personal. I was born this month in 1987. That year had some great films released. So, what made the bracket from that year?

Unlike last month’s Classic, I will not be the only deciding vote in these tournaments. I am enlisting at least 2 others each time to decide winners in each tourney. Sometimes the voting pool will be more than 2. In the future, I will also throw it out to all of you to decide. For this tournament, it only makes sense that two of the three voters should be my parents, with me having the third vote. Which film will be the favorite of my family from the year I was born? Let’s find out.

1. Beverly Hills Cop II vs 16. Dirty Dancing

Beverly Hills Cop II wins 3-0

8. Lethal Weapon vs 9. The Witches of Eastwick

Lethal Weapon wins 3-0

5. Three Men and a Baby vs 12. La Bamba

Three Men and a Baby wins 2-1

4. The Untouchables vs 13. Crocodile Dundee

The Untouchables wins 3-0

6. The Secret of My Success vs 11. Dragnet

Dragnet wins 3-0

3. Fatal Attraction vs 14. Robocop

Robocop wins 2-1

7. Stakeout vs 10. Predator

Predator wins 2-1

2. Platoon vs 15. Outrageous Fortune

Platoon wins 3-0

Going into this tournament, I knew The Untouchables was the heavy favorite. Based on my Dad not even waiting for me to say Crocodile Dundee before he voted for The Untouchables, this could be over already. One way to find out though.

1. Beverly Hills Cop II vs 8. Lethal Weapon

Beverly Hills Cop II wins 3-0

5. Three Men and a Baby vs 4. The Untouchables

The Untouchables wins 3-0

14. Robocop vs 11. Dragnet

Robocop wins 2-1

2. Platoon vs 10. Predator

Predator wins 2-1

Can Axel Foley put an end to Ness’s run? Will me living in Detroit sway the voting towards Robocop?

1. Beverly Hills Cop II vs 4. The Untouchables

The Untouchables wins 3-0

14. Robocop vs 10. Predator

Predator wins 3-0

It’s Al Capone vs Arnold’s nemesis in the final.

8. The Untouchables vs 10. Predator

The Untouchables wins 3-0

So, in the end, The Untouchables couldn’t be touched. It took four straight 3-0 votes in route to the title. Next tournament is one that is a personal one for me on 5/22. Theme will be Memorial Day weekend, which happens to be when my birthday falls most years.
