Week of June 17th – Riding down the Road

Of course, a few days after I posted that $100 million post here, Inside Out 2 was the first to hit $100 million in its first weekend. It got $155 million to be exact. That is great for Disney, and more importantly, for Pixar. As I type this, it’s second weekend numbers are out, and it made $100 million in the second weekend. It should get to $500 million easily these next couple weeks. Now, it will be interesting to see not just how much Despicable Me 4 makes the week after next, but how it will affect Inside Out 2 with a some real opponent. Until then though, on to the reviews!

Oh boy. I was so ready to see this last year when it was post to come out. Then Disney decided they didn’t want to release it, so it went to Focus Features and came out this week. It was so worth the wait because I really loved it. One of favorite movies is Goodfellas, and there is so much in the film that felt like that movie. From Jodie Comer’s Kathy narrating a lot of the film, to our main characters not being great people. There isn’t much of plot to this as it is inspired by a photo book by Danny Lyon, played in this movie by Mike Faist. As for Austin Butler and Tom Hardy, they really make the movie work just as much as Comer. This is sure a movie to take your Dad to. It doesn’t have of action, but it does really get into the characters and show how what started as a motorcycle club got away from what it was supposed to be, and turned into a gang. This my can of movie, and it should stay in the top five the rest of the year.

This was not a pleasant watch, and it won’t because of the storyline. This was about a daughter (played by Lena Dunham) and a father (Stephen Fry) on a trip to Poland to see where his fa mily came from. Her father is a Holocaust survivor, so Poland isn’t a great place for him to go back to. Fry is ok as her father, and you can tell that character is trying to keep some things away from his daughter. The problem here is Dunham. She just wasn’t the right person to play the daughter. She is just so unlikable as more than a few points of the story. Also, if you have a story like this, shouldn’t the daughter and father like each other? They don’t feel like a family in this movie, and that kind of sabotages everything. Also, she is taking pictures at Auschwitz like tourist, after getting mad about people not calling it a death camp. That was annoying. This was just waste of time that could’ve been so much better.

I’ve spoken about a top 3 film for me, so I guess it’s time to talk about a bottom 4 one. It’s been 5 years since Jessica Alba appeared in a film. Why was this the one she picked to come back? The storyline is weak, and while it the film was a little longer than 90 minutes, it was still too long by about 30 minutes. It is described as a female-led cross between First Bleed and John Wick, but this isn’t even close to either one of those. You know what makes fight good to watch in a movie? Being able to actually seen everything. In this, most of the action is at night, or in a cave, hiding some of the action. This was just a this a waste of time that should be forgotten.

After back to back wins, it might be time for someone to send Inside Out 2 off to second place. That will be A Quiet Place: Day 2. It should also take away more people watching Bad Boys too. The emotions have one more week to themselves until the Minions return to theaters.

  1. A Quiet Place: Day One
  2. Inside Out 2
  3. Bad Boys: Ride or Die
  4. The Bikeriders
  5. Kind of Kindness

This upcoming week, it’s two movies in theaters for me, and one on tv to end the month, and the first half of the year. Also, Wednesday is the next round of my Concession War.
