2024 Halftime Check-in

In the first quarter, I saw 39 movies. In the second quarter, I again saw 39 movies. The second quarter was a lot like the first. Let’s start will the Bottom 10 this time.

Of the 10, 6 are new this quarter. A few I assumed would be down here as the Netflix originals are usually terrible. That was the case for Atlas, Rebel Moon, and Trigger Warning. That isn’t to say all Netflix movies are terrible. I’ll get into that in the next section. Elsewhere, there is Treasure and I Saw the TV Glow. These were independent films that I had high hopes for an both really disappointed me in very different ways. Finally, You Can’t Rum Forever tried to break up the truly awful trio at the bottom of the list, but while it is a waste of time, it still isn’t as ad as those. I’m not sure anything will break this there up by the end of the year, but we will see.

We have gone over the terrible movies so far this year for me. Let’s talk about the best ones now.

There are two kinds of Netflix films. There are ones they make themselves, and ones they purchase and distribute. The distributed ones are usually the good ones. For me, it is evident on my Top 10 with both Society of the Snow and Hitman checking in. Hitman is a delight and I was so happy it lived up to my expectations after hearing about it last festival season. At the 10 spot, it’s Furiosa. That one might have done poorly in the Box Offica, and is clearly not at the same level as Fury Road, but it was still a very creative film, and it’s a shame that it’s failure will stop and future trips to the wasteland. The other two new entries to the Top 10 this quarter are Civil War and Boy Kills World. Nothing this quarter came close to dethroning Dune from the top spot.

So, that is where my rankings stand as of the end of June. For the 3rd quarter, there are a few I think could show up in the Top 10 update in October. Some films to keep and eye on are Longlegs, Sing Sing, Megalopolis, and Joker: Folie à Duex. As for what could show up in the bottom 10, well, they just kind of appear as the year moves on. I don’t actively seek them out. I go into every movie hoping for the best. Some are just bad.
