Week of March 24th – A Small Week

Car issue in the middle of the week sent me up to the country for the rest of the week. Plus side, I spent time with family. Minus side, my original plan for this week was scratched. My only options without driving an hour were Snow White, Alto Knights, A Working Man, or Novocaine. That means A Working Man stayed on the schedule, and Death of a Unicorn moved to Monday when I got back to the city. On to the reviews!

This was an interesting film that felt like it was just missing something. The premise is simply an obsessive fan that escapes from a mental asylum (Ray Nicholson) who believes that they are married a pop star (Samara Weaving). He breaks into her house with the help of someone else who breaks out the of the asylum, and makes his plan happen. He effectively keeps her hostage until it is time for the “wedding”. How he does that is fun at times and does not overstay its welcome. What is missing in this film for me is any sort of backstory. The plot just starts and never really explains what caused him to be so crazy for her. Nicholson was really good though in this, and Weaving was also good, but this really wasn’t her story.

Jason Statham movies seem to be becoming the same. After last year’s The Beekeeper, which was just the right amount of stupid fun, we have another from him. What makes these films less and less fun to watch is the Statham is becoming more and more a Terminator. It is kind of unfair of a comparison, but with the John Wick films, Keanu actually gets hurt, and in the 4th in the series, seemingly dies. In this one, there are dozens of Russian goons and drug dealers that just have Stormtrooper aim, as Statham misses the hundreds of bullets aimed his way. It makes it less interesting when we see new enemies that are built up as formidable, but they are disposed of embarrassingly easy. Like in The Beekeeper, this film sets up a sequel, and it will probably get one, but maybe on the next one Statham could actually bleed..

Easy week to pick the winner.

  1. A Minecraft Movie
  2. A Working Man
  3. The Chosen: Last Supper
  4. Snow White
  5. The Woman in the Yard

4 films this week, and 2 of them was yesterday, so only 2 more to go around Tigers games for me the rest of the week.
