2024 was a kind of meh year for me. One the positive side, I saw 164 films this year, which is well over the 113 films that was my old high score in 2023. On the somewhat negative, there was a lot of just ok to meh movies for me. Of the 164 films I saw, 111 of them were rated between 3.5 and 2.5 out of 5, and 49 of them were 3/5. Maybe it was me being burned out at times, or my standards are getting a little too high. That might not be it as some of the big Oscar films (Anora and Emilia Perez) are part of that 111 film quagmire.
None of those 111 films are part of the Bottom 10 though. Let’s take a look at the movies that I wished I could forget about.

For this final quarter of the year, only two new entry in the bottom of the rankings. Mr Crocket was really stupid and almost broke up the almost untouchable bottom three for me. However, I have to at least give it points for creativity. A quarter point, but that is enough for it to take 4th worst. I also forgot to color it as such, but Kraven made it two Sony spin-offs in the bottom ten. I don’t think I could in good conscience suggest anyone waste their time watching any of these 10 here. Which is a shame because I was really hoping for the best for Megalopolis. I don’t think repeat viewings will help make that mess make sense.
Before we get to the top of my rankings, an intermission to reflect on how I am at predicting.

I guessed 8 of the 10 that made the top 10, just not in the correct order. Missed on Twisters and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. The shaky one right now is the only one I have dead on, Kung Fu Panda 4. As of now Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is $57 million behind it with all of January in front of it, and could very well knock Po off the list. Now, let’s go from cold hard numbers to feelings.

Looking over these ten you might assume I was disappointed on the year. To a certain extent, I guess I was. Nearly all of my Top 10 below are not here, and a lot of them are in the wasteland that is the 3/5’s in my rankings. If you are curious, Mickey 17 will show up on the 2025 list in tomorrow’s preview post as it got pushed to 2025. It has since had three different release dates as well in 2025, so who knows when I will get to see it at this point. Still glad Dune: Part 2 didn’t let me down.
Ok. We have went over the films that made me hate life, and how I did in my projections that year. Let’s end this exercise by going over the films that I thought were the best of the year.

Unlike the bottom ten, the top of the rankings have a lot of turnover from the final three months of 2024. A lot of that originally was due to my visit to the Chicago Film Festival in October. Coming out of that event, I had Blitz, The Brutalist, and Conclave in the top 10. Over the remaining two months of the year, only September 5 stayed in it’s post. I love that film and have now seen it twice. When it goes wide in a few weeks, you show seek it out. I am higher that a lot on Saturday Night, but that is mainly due to my fandom of SNL and me thinking the Reitman’s film really captured the madness of what that first night must have been. While I am not part of the mob who think Wicked is the best thing in the world, I do think it is a very successful adaptation that really can be enjoyed by everyone. That is something we have very few options of in theaters lately. Lastly, Juror #2 takes the final spot in the top 10. Why WB is so afraid of people seeing this in theaters is beyond me. It’s really good, and would most likely make money if they put in theaters, even if it was in a less limited release than the 50 screen release they ended up doing before dumping it on MAX just before Christmas.
