With a lack of wide releases this week, it really lit me in a bind. The only film I had this week was the live recording of Hadestown that I am not counting in the rankings. It is my favorite musical and I can’t be unbiased on my feelings of the musical. So with no other options this week, and numbers are my thing, lets go through what just happened last weekend with The Odyssey’s opening.

Off the top, Odyssey was the highest worldwide opening for Nolan, besting the $239M that 2012’s The Dark Knight Rises brought in. The $264M Odyssey brought in globally is such a big number, and to get that large of an opening, it had to be playing in a lot of markets. The film was the biggest foreign debut for Nolan. It came in at $139.6M in 73 markets, 12,700 locations, and 25,600 screens. That came out to be Universal’s biggest ever opening in 11 markets, and the biggest for Nolan in 48 (including France, Italy, India, Spain, Brazil, Netherlands, and Poland). Domestically, it was Nolan’s largest opening weekend that didn’t involve Batman.

EntTelligence reported that 7.5M people watched The Odyssey in North America. By comparison, 5.9M watched Oppenheimer. Looking a little further into the weeds, AMC was the leading chain at $23M, followed by Regal ($17M), Cinemark ($11.7M), and Canada’s Cineplex ($7.4M). Another level down, the highest grossing venues were AMC Lincoln Square NYC ($394K), TCL Chinese ($381K), Regal Irvine Spectrum ($307K), AMC Empire 25 ($261K), Regal LA Live ($253.6K). With this being the first film to be filmed completely in IMAX, the onus is to watch it on IMAX. All enhanced formats (IMAX, PLFs, 70MM) generated 53% of the domestic opening. IMAX had a 24% share of the Box Office, third highest behind Interstellar and Oppenheimer.

After a week of Odyssey domination, it will come up against a worthy competitor that will look to out do everything that it accomplished the last two weeks.

Monday is another mystery movie that I am almost sure will be One Night Only. I have the opening night fan event for Spider-Man on Thursday, and more than likely I Want Your Sex on Saturday.
